We do not use bait or feed the sharks. The encounter is focused on watching their natural, calm behavior.
The bull shark observation dive is followed by a second dive on a nearby, shallower Playa del Carmen reef.
Descend by fixed line to the sandy observation area at approximately 27m / 90ft.
The season typically runs from mid-November to mid-February, with exact dates guided by shark activity and local operations.
A detailed briefing covers shark behavior, positioning, communication, current, and the plan for the dive.
Bottom time is limited by no-decompression limits, gas, conditions, and the overall group plan.
Sightings cannot be guaranteed, but the bull shark observation fee is refunded if the sharks are not seen or are only glimpsed briefly in the distance.
Observe bull sharks in the wild without bait or feeding. Following a detailed brieifng we descend to Shark Point for a calm, observation dive, then enjoy a second dive on a nearby Playa del Carmen reef.
This seasonal deep dive is for Advanced divers with recent experience. Suitable Open Water divers may be able to add SDI Deep Adventure training after a prior skills assessment.

A seasonal wildlife encounter
Every winter, bull sharks gather in the waters just offshore from Playa del Carmen. This gives experienced divers a rare opportunity to share the water with these powerful, graceful animals and observe how calmly they move through their natural environment.
The season typically runs from mid-November to mid-February, although nature sets the real calendar.
Our trips are for observation only. We do not use bait and we do not feed the sharks. Instead, we give them space and watch as they patrol the sandy area at their own pace. The first sight of a bull shark can be exhilarating; many divers are then struck by how quiet and peaceful the encounter feels.
How the two-dive trip works
We generally operate these trips on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoons, with arrival at Tank-Ha at 12:00. Your guide will prepare the equipment and give a detailed briefing covering the dive plan, bull shark behavior, body position, communication, current, and what to do during the encounter.
The boat ride to Shark Point is short. We normally descend on a fixed line to the sandy observation area at approximately 27m / 90ft. Ropes in the area can help divers maintain a comfortable position when there is current, reducing unnecessary movement while we wait and watch.
If shark activity is elsewhere or the current makes the stationary plan less comfortable, the guide may choose a controlled drift to cover more ground. The exact plan is always based on the conditions, the group, and the sharks.
After the shark dive, we complete a surface interval with water and a snack before making a second dive on a nearby, shallower reef. This relaxed second dive provides a change of pace and another chance to enjoy Playa del Carmen’s turtles, rays, morays, corals, and schools of tropical fish.
Observation, not a staged attraction
This is not a staged attraction in an aquarium with captive animals, bull sharks are wild animals. Their movements, distance from the group, and time in the area are entirely their own. We cannot guarantee a sighting or promise that a shark will pass close to you. This unpredictability is part of a genuine wildlife encounter.
The trip price includes a 900mxn bull shark observation fee. This covers government fees, a community contribution supporting the protection of local shark operations, and additional guide payments. If we do not see bull sharks, or only glimpse them briefly in the distance, we refund this fee.
Experience and depth requirements
This is a deep dive at approximately 27m / 90ft, sometimes with current. Divers should hold an Advanced Open Water certification or equivalent, have recent dive experience, be comfortable controlling buoyancy at depth, and be ready to follow the guide’s instructions closely.
Open Water divers are trained to a maximum depth of 18m / 60ft. If you have suitable recent experience, this does not necessarily mean you need to miss this seasonal encounter. Advanced Open Water divers or above do not require this training.
We can provide SDI Deep Adventure training (+$400) to give suitable Open Water divers the skills and knowledge to dive to depths of up to 30m / 100ft.
The SDI Deep dive involves reading the Deep chapter of the SDI Advanced Adventure Diver manual and answering a series of questions before you arrive. We will send the materials electronically, then your instructor will review your answers as part of an extended briefing.
According to SDI Training Standards, we need to assess your diving skills before you are eligible for deep training. This can take place during a prior dive or in the pool as part of a skills refresh.
Your instructor will accompany you on the shark dive and conduct short in-water exercises. These exercises normally do not take long and are planned to fit around the enjoyment of the dive.
Open Water training has a maximum depth of 18m / 60ft. We follow SDI, PADI, and industry recommendations not to take divers beyond their training limits, helping keep the dive within appropriate training and insurance coverage.
After the dive, you will receive a certificate of completion. The Deep Adventure dive is one of the five dives that count toward the full SDI Advanced Adventure Diver course, so you will complete the relevant SDI paperwork with us.
Please contact us before booking so we can review your certification, recent experience, available dates, and whether the required assessment can fit your schedule.
Could Nitrox help?
At 27m / 90ft, no-decompression time is often one of the factors that limits the
shark dive (Max bottom time is approx 20 minutes* using air).
Nitrox can extend the available no-decompression limit and can
sometimes allow more observation time (approx 30 minutes* using 32% nitrox
tank). The final dive time still depends on the gas mix, depth, gas consumption,
conditions, shark activity, and the whole group’s plan.
*Specific times will depend on your dive computer model
Nitrox tanks are free for certified Nitrox divers when diving with us. If you are not yet certified, our Enriched Air (Nitrox) course combines online learning with a short practical workshop and requires no certification dives, making it easy to complete before your trip.
